Hello

The following are translated versions of several news coverage articles on the death of Tan Shyn Lyn in the Chinese Press, made available that non-chinese speaking friends may read and, as far as the rest of us, know something about what happened.

While every effort was made towards a faithful translation, there are no guarantees with respect to accuracy. I will however be happy to be notified of translation errors and suggested amendments.

What is in the past is now beyond our power to salvage. No amount of shocked sorrow can undo what is done. But what we can do for Tan Shyn Lyn, I think, is to care a little more. To not leave your friends alone, and to go and give them whatever support you can – and all the support you can. We are responsible for every little thing we choose and choose not to do. We can make that difference.

Suffered from depression and was on medication for a year – left notes describing friends as untrue/insincere

(Malacca) Family members of dentistry student Tan Shyn Lyn, who leapt to her death in Singapore, revealed that the deceased had been suffering from depression, and had sought medical help a year ago, subsequently being on medication. Tan Shyn Lyn left behind 3 notes for her family, and another to a friend (or friends), the contents of the latter describing her surrounding friends as untrue/insincere.

Tan Chee Kwan (25 years old), brother of the deceased, held the ceremony for his sister’s remains today(Friday, 23rd April). Responding to the interviewing reporter, he revealed that he and his sister were the only children at home.

“The earlier news article reported that of the three notes my sister left, one was for a male friend. But that note was really for me. My sister never had a boyfriend.”

Tan Chee Kwan said that his sister never explained the reason for her suicide in the note, and only urged him to take care of their parents and their pet golden retriever at home.

Strong academic student and Asean Scholarship Awardee

He said the golden retriever at home was bought by his sister, and is presently four years old. His sister loved and doted on the dog.

He also noted that the Singapore police had discovered three diaries left by his sister, and had taken them to assist in the investigation. He has not seen the diaries, but they would be returned to the family once investigation completes.

Tan Chee Kwan, who graduated from Nanjing Normal University (NNU), had recently joined Sinchew Daily as a sports reporter.

He said that though the family had moved to Selangor and lived there for many years, they chose to place her cremated remains at the Melaka Memorial Park as all her relatives are in Malacca.

He revealed that his sister studied in Catholic High School, Petaling Jaya during her secondary school years, where she excelled academically and was awarded the Asean Scholarship award in her third year, after which she left to continue her studies in Singapore.

“When she first went to university she had wanted to study Forensic Medicine. But my father was of opinion that Forensic Medicine was a difficult field to study, and so my sister chose medicine and dentistry, eventually qualifying for dentistry.”

Tan Chee Kwan said that his sister was two months away from graduating from the National University of Singapore where she was studying. The family was shocked to receive the news of her passing.

Had been a victim of bullying

Tan Chee Kwan revealed that his sister had concealed the fact that she had sought psychiatric help.

However, he was comforted to know his sister had sought to face and address her problem. Though his sister is no longer here, as a brother, he wishes her well.

Always seeking the best

He said that his sister had traveled to Singapore alone after Form 3, and subsequently lived in a hostel. His sister had then revealed that she was bullied by her fellow students and was unhappy. Her housemasters had also counseled her.

“Perhaps her inner turmoil had begun accumulating at that point.”

He said his sister was a person who always sought the best, and never had any trouble with her academics.

“However, my sister was very frugal. In order to save money, she didn’t rent a flat unit with her friends, but chose instead to rent a small room on a 15th floor flat unit and lived there alone.”

He said that his sister’s last visit home was on the 13th of March, when her father had just completed a kidney surgery.

He said, when his sister was cremated in Singapore, professors and friends alike came for the final send-off. According to his sister’s friends, his sister spoke little of late, and had been very quiet.

Friends and family of the deceased came to the Melaka Memorial Park on Friday, bringing fruits and flowers. The women were tearful and appeared to be very sorrowful. The parents of the deceased were also present, but relatives declined to have them interviewed.

Dentistry student leaps to her death: Sought psychiatric treatment without family knowledge – Tan Shyn Lyn suffered from depression.

(Malacca) Tan Shyn Lyn, a Malaysian dentistry student who studied in Singapore suffered from depression before her death. She received psychiatric treatment and was on medication for nearly a year.

22 year-old Tan Shyn Lyn’s body was cremated in Singapore. Her cremated remains were brought to the Melaka Memorial Park, Malacca this afternoon (Friday, 23rd April).

Shyn Lyn’s elder brother Tan Chee Kwan (25 years old) graduated from Nanjing Normal University (NNU) and recently joined Sinchew Daily this April as a sports reporter.

In an interview at Melaka Memorial Park, he said that his sister regularly kept the pressure she faced in Singapore to herself. Only after she passed away did he know that his sister had been receiving psychiatric help for almost a year.

He pointed out that though his sister was somewhat quiet in nature, she was still a relatively cheerful girl who regularly went out with friends.

He said that the family last met her on the 13th and 14th of March. She had come back to visit her father who had been recuperating at home after undergoing a kidney surgery.

“She behaved normally during that visit, though a little quieter. She also brought back a pile of books for exam revision.”

He pointed out that his sister was about to take an exam in May, and that she had never had trouble with her studies. He therefore believes that the reason his sister committed suicide was not related to academic pressure.

Nothing appeared amiss during her visit home in March

He emphasized that nothing appeared amiss when his sister visited home in March. Thus the family had been shocked and disbelieving when they received the news of her suicide.

As Malacca is Tan Shyn Lyn’s hometown, the family chose The Melaka Memorial Park as the final resting place of her cremated remains. She had moved to Kuala Lumpur after her kindergarten years in Malacca. Both she and her brother completed their secondary education in Catholic High School, Petaling Jaya.

Third note not addressed to her boyfriend
Appealed to parents and brother to take care of themselves

Tan Zhi Quan clarified that of the three notes left behind by his sister, 2 were for her parents, and the third was addressed to him, not to a male friend. To the best of his knowledge, his sister did not have a boyfriend.

Reason for suicide unmentioned

According to him, his sister had left him a note urging him to take good care of himself, to take good care of their parents, and to care for their pet dog, but revealed nothing as to why she had committed suicide. “My sister bought our pet dog, a golden retriever, four years ago. The dog had been quieter than usual these few days as it watched people come and go at home. We told it that its owner was no longer here.”

He reveals that his sister had also left behind three diaries and a printed letter to a friend (or friends). The letter described many as false and insincere. The diaries are presently in the hands of the Singapore police.

Constant concern for family when alive

“My sister was a competitive person who sought the best in everything. She was also very frugal, and was constantly concerned for the family. In order to save on rent while studying in NUS, she rented a small single room instead of staying with friends in a flat unit.

He went on to point out that his sister had always been good with her studies, winning the Asean Scholarship Award in form three, and studying in Singapore since. She had wanted to study Forensic Medicine, but eventually enrolled in Dentistry.

He revealed that his sister had been a victim of bullying by her hostel mates during her first year. The school had subsequently taken action to stop the bullying.

Regarding his sister’s departure, he gave his best wishes, and took pride in the fact that his sister had faced up to her problems (by seeing a psychiatrist).
